Hair Dye 101

I love to experiment with new hairstyles and trends. Walking down the hair color aisles of Target always inspire me because of the beautiful range of shades. If you've never dyed your hair before or need some tips, look no further! I'm not a professional hair colorist but I have had plenty of experience with hair dye and would love to share some advice to all of my lovely readers, especially you ladies that want to spice your color up!

Head to the Salon if:
You want to get highlights done, or a color that is more than two shades lighter or darker than your natural color, the best choice is to go to a salon and find a qualified hair stylist to create your perfect look. If you're living in Florida, definitely check out Mikel's Salon. The stylists are AMAZING! Reason being for a salon visit versus at home, is that these types of dye jobs require precision and sometimes stronger products to get the color just right. My best recommendation is to set up a consultation with a stylist to determine the best hair color shade or highlights for you.

DIY at Home if:
You want a subtle change to your hair that is no more than two shades lighter or darker than your natural color, you would like to experiment with a color that will only last up to 28 shampoos, or a color that is ammonia free and less damaging to your hair. At home or "box" hair color from the drugstore is great for brunettes that want to add warmth to their color by choosing an auburn shade or for blondes that want to brighten their natural color while still looking natural. My recommendations for permanent at home hair color are Garnier Nutrisse Hair Color and L'oreal Superior Preference. For semi permanent hair color with no ammonia that lasts up to 28 shampoos, try out Clairol Natural Instincts.

Now that you know the basics of choosing between a salon or at home hair color, check out my tutorials for step by step instructions.
